5 trust signals your Shopify store needs before you spend $1 more on ads

Paid traffic can't fix a store that reads as risky. The five-point trust checklist first-time buyers run in their heads, and how to pass it.

A first-time visitor to your store runs a background check in about eight seconds. They don't do it consciously, it's a gut read: is this a real business, or will my money disappear? If the gut says risky, no ad budget on earth converts them.

Before you scale traffic, pass this checklist.

1. Real reviews, visible on product pages

Social proof is the heaviest trust lever there is. Install a reviews app (Judge.me has a free tier), get genuine reviews from real customers, early ones can come from friends and family who actually bought and used the product, and show stars near the price. Never fabricate reviews. Beyond being illegal in most places (the ACCC actively pursues fake reviews in Australia), shoppers smell them, and one caught fake nukes all the real ones.

2. Policies a buyer can actually find

Refund policy, privacy policy, shipping policy, terms, linked in the footer, written in plain language. Nobody reads them line by line; they scan for their existence. A store with no refund policy reads as a store that doesn't do refunds. Shopify generates compliant templates in minutes.

3. A way to reach a human

A contact page with an email that matches your domain (support@yourstore.com, not a Gmail). A response-time promise you can keep. Anonymous stores read as disposable stores, and buyers are right about that often enough to be wary.

4. Recognisable payment options

PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Afterpay, these logos are trust badges that transfer their credibility to your checkout. A first-time buyer who won't hand a card to an unknown store will often happily pay through PayPal or a buy-now-pay-later, because the trusted brand is holding the risk. Enable them and show them.

5. Shipping and returns honesty near the buy button

"Free AU shipping · 30-day returns · arrives in 5–10 business days", one line under the add-to-cart button pre-answers the three questions every buyer is silently asking: what does delivery cost, how long will it take, and what if it's wrong? Burying those answers doesn't hide them; it just means the buyer leaves to look for them and never comes back.

The order matters

Notice what's not on this list: a prettier logo, more Instagram followers, a rebrand. Trust is mostly plumbing, not polish, and every item above is fixable this week for close to $0. Do it before your next ad campaign, not after, because ads multiply whatever's already true about your store. If it converts, ads scale the winning. If it leaks, ads scale the leak.
