Your Shopify store gets traffic but no sales? Here's the real diagnosis

Traffic without orders is almost never an ads problem. Walk your funnel like an auditor: the five failure points, in the order they actually kill stores.

You're getting sessions. Maybe hundreds a day. And the orders screen still says zero.

The reflex is to blame the ads and buy more traffic. That's almost always wrong, and expensive. Traffic without sales means something between the click and the card is broken, and pouring more clicks through a broken funnel just burns money faster.

Here are the five failure points, in the order they actually kill new stores.

1. A cost surprise at checkout

The single most common killer. Your product is $19.99 on the page, then checkout adds $11 shipping and the total jumps 55%. Shoppers don't complain; they just leave. If your funnel shows add-to-carts and checkout starts but no completed orders, look here first. We watched one store rack up 66 add-to-carts and 16 checkout starts with zero completed orders, the only broken thing was a shipping fee revealed at the last step.

Check yourself: buy your own product on your phone. Is the final total the number you expected on the product page? If not, bake shipping into the price or show it up front.

2. A trust deficit

New store, no reviews, no physical address, no contact page, stock photos, buyers can't tell you apart from a scam, so they treat you like one. Trust is mostly a checklist: real reviews visible on product pages, refund/privacy/shipping policies linked in the footer, a contact method a human would answer, HTTPS, recognisable payment options (PayPal, Shop Pay, Afterpay).

3. Junk traffic

Open your traffic report and look at sources, not totals. If most sessions are "unknown" or "direct" on a brand nobody's heard of, much of your "traffic" is bots and low-intent clicks, and no funnel converts visitors who were never real. Judge conversion only on qualified sources: search, genuinely-targeted paid, engaged social.

4. Product pages that don't sell

One photo, a paragraph of supplier text, no sizing, no answers to the obvious objection. A buying-grade product page has 3–5 real images, copy that leads with the problem it solves, shipping and returns info near the buy button, and reviews below the fold.

5. Speed

Every extra second of mobile load time sheds real buyers. Heavy themes and app-script pileups are the usual culprits. Test your store on your phone over mobile data, not office wifi.

Walk your funnel like an auditor

The numbers tell you which failure is yours:

  • Sessions but few product views → traffic quality or homepage problem
  • Product views but few add-to-carts → product page or price problem
  • Add-to-carts but few checkouts → trust problem
  • Checkouts but no orders → cost surprise at checkout (almost always)

Fix the one stage that's leaking before touching anything else, and before spending another dollar on ads.
